The historical block of Shuomen Street is an important part of "the northern port" in the layout of ancient city. It covers an area of 21.78 hectares by starting in the west to Jiefang North Road and to Wangjiang Road and Linjiang Port in the north, then to Yongning Lane in the south and to Shuimen Lane in the east, which includes the Wenzhou No. 2 Senior High School. The key protection area within this block starts at Shuimen Lane in the east, to the Yongning Lane in the south, to Liberation North Road in the west and to Shuomen North Street(N) in the north.

This block is the only reserved historical block in the north of this ancient city ("the northern port"), preserving the original north gate of the ancient city (present Shuimentou), the representative blocks of which are Yongning Alley, also called Yongning Lane and Shuomen Street. There is a Yongning Temple inside the lane, so it is also called Yongningdian Lane which starts in the south at Bingying Lane, heads towards the north, then turns west to Jiefang North Road. It got its name in the 3rd year of Shun Emperor ( A.D.138) of the Eastern Han Dynasty (A.D.25-220) when the Emperor decided to build Yongning County in this area. It was a bustling neighborhood at ancient times. With such cultural relics and historic sites as fire walls, monuments in it, Shuomen Street is considered as a feature of the Wenzhou’s blocks. The entire block buildings have been basically preserved for commerce and residence now.
