Ou Embroidery—A Highly Refined Craft Art of Wenzhou City

Ou embroidery, also known as scroll painting, is a local traditional art of Wenzhou region in Zhejiang Province. Ou Embroidery together with Hunan Embroidery, Jiangsu Embroidery and Sichuan Embroidery are renowned as the four famous embroidery in China. It is one of the intangible cultural heritages in Wenzhou area.
Ou embroidery, also known as scroll painting, is a local traditional art of Wenzhou region in Zhejiang Province. It is developed from Chinese traditional embroidery. Ou Embroidery together with Hunan Embroidery, Jiangsu Embroidery and Sichuan Embroidery are renowned as the four famous embroidery in China. Ou Embroidery, as one of the famous embroidery products for export purposes in China, is not only highly cherished by the country, but also given to international friends as national presents. It is one of the intangible cultural heritages in Wenzhou area.

Ou embroidery features by extremely unique technological process. First of all, the embroidery worker has to remove the green skin on the moso bamboo, stripe each layer, boil the bamboo, reel off the silk, and weave into bamboo scroll; next use paint or colorful thread to embroider flowers, birds, waters, mountains, and figures. One of its most distinctive features is complex stitches and extremely fine craftsmanship. Its structural characteristics include distinct texture, neat stitches, varied stitching methods, bright but comfortable embroidered surface, colorful and harmonious luster, and highly vivid pictures of the portraits, orchids and bamboos. Featured by “distinctive theme, bright color, detailed structure, and clear embroidery texture”, Ou Embroidery is highly ornamental and has strong regional style.
