The She ethnic group inhabit primarily mountainous areas in Wenzhou, including districts of Taishun, Wencheng, Pingyang and Cangnan etc.. Folksongs, not only serve She people as their form of entertainment, but also as the signature activity predominate their cultural life. They court with songs, celebrate holidays with songs, condole and eulogize with songs, socialize with songs, and pass down most of their history and legend in songs. The She ethnic folksong, richly embodied with its exotic ethnicity, is marked by gracefully affectionate melodies and variable rhythms. Extra words and function words dotted its lyrics which are usually structured into paragraphs consisting four lines of either four-characters or seven-characters rhymed verses. She people excel in duet, which themselves call “Shuang Tiao Luo” and “Shuang Yin” by outsiders. Many of them can improvise while rhyming with She language, some may even perform dialogue for one or two nights with non-repetitive words. The art form was included into the third National Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011.
